Questa volta non lo vedremo più tornare sui suoi passi per dire “un’ultima cosa” (Just one more thing), buttata lì “per caso”. Il Tenente Colombo è uscito davvero di scena e questa volta per sempre. Peter Falk ci ha lasciati giovedì scorso 23 giugno a Beverly Hills, all’età di 83 anni, gli ultimi dei quali passati a combattere col terribile morbo di Alzheimer.

Nato a New York il 16 settembre del 1927  da padre polacco di origini ungheresi e da madre russa, l’attore si fece strada nel mondo dello spettacolo tra gli anni cinquanta e sessanta, recitando in numerose serie tv come Alfred Hitchcock Presenta, e Ai confini della realtà. Al cinema la fortuna gli sorrise nel 1961 con Angeli con la pistola, che gli regalò un ruolo accanto alle star Glenn Ford e Bette Davis.

La sua carriera arrivò però alla svolta decisiva nel 1968, quando fu scritturato per il ruolo da protagonista della serie Il tenente Colombo, che lo vide protagonista dal 1971 al 2003. Una parte che gli calzava a pennello e che gli rimase cucita addosso fino alla fine insieme a quell’impermeabile malconcio, a quell’auto scalcinata e al sigaro che , insieme al suo occhio di vetro (applicato all’età di tre anni a causa di un tumore) rappresentavano i suoi segni distintivi.

Tra i film cui prese parte ricordiamo Una moglie con Gena Rowlands (1974), Una strana coppia di suoceri con Alan Arkin (1979) e Il cielo sopra Berlino di Wim Wenders (1987), in cui interpretava se stesso, rivelando di essere stato un angelo che per vivere aveva rinunciato all’immortalità. Ne La storia fantastica (1987) era l’anziano che racconta la storia al nipotino (Fred Savage), con quel suo fare rassicurante che lo rendeva familiare al primo sguardo. Spaziò anche tra detective story, commedie e parodie come Invito a cena con delitto.

Le apparizioni più recenti sono state per film tv e per il cinema nel 2007 per un breve cameo nel film Next con Nicolas Cage.

Mentre nel corso delle 7 stagioni del Tenente Colombo non ci è mai stato dato modo di fare la conoscenza della misteriosa Signora Colombo, nella vita reale sappiamo che le sue due mogli sono state la compagna di studi Alyce Mayo, sposata nel 1960 e con la quale adottò due figlie: Catherine e Jackie, e l’attrice Shera Danese che Falk sposò nel 1977, un anno dopo il divorzio dalla prima moglie.
